Limited slipcased edition of 100 hand-numbered copies (plate pasted-on front free endpaper notes edition number), with an original Type-C print, "Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden VIII, 2002," image size 22.3 x 22.1 cm, paper size 26 x 24 cm (numbered and signed in pencil on verso by Höfer, print edition 100, printed in 2003 for this edition) in a separate cloth portfolio for presentation (protected in folded archival paper). Both the book and photograph (in cloth portfolio) fit inside the larger cloth slipcase.

Description
Candida Hofer's rooms are densely packed with the freight of every person who exhaled in its spaces before she arrived with her view camera and her sense of gravity, history, and keen awareness of the sites of intellectual discovery. Whether the spaces are ornate libraries or architectural wonders, the photographs stop time, creating a sense of living mortuaries. The spaces are ornate and breathing. The oppressive orderliness of the images suggests the layers of knowledge that history and time confer. There is a grandness to the work and a poignancy. At first, the photographs appear as documents, upon closer examination, they reveal their artifice, through highly controlled lighting and a depth of field that is startling and impossible.
