First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine cloth, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Introduction by Maria Morris Hambourg, essays by Dana Friis-Hansen and Atsuo Yasuda (in English). Includes an exceptional collection of Sugimoto's day seascapes, night seascapes and a selection of images from the artist's work Hall of Thirty-Three Bays. Includes exhibition history and bibliography. 94 pp., with 36 plates reproduced in tritone and quadtone, by Robert J. Hennessey and Meridian Printing, Rhode Island. The reproductions, especially the 26 quadratone seascape plates, are absolutely exquisite. This is the only book of Sugimoto's work whose reproductions do justice to the subtleties of the seascape images, especially the very dark night seascapes. One of the very finest publications of Sugimoto's work, including the most exquisite reproductions of the seascape series published to-date. 12-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches. Only 1000 hardbound copies were printed. Out of print. Very scarce.
Fine in Fine dust jacket (very light wear to pastedown endpapers, otherwise mint).
Published on the occasion of the 1996 exhibition Sugimoto at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston and the Hara Museum, Tokyo, Japan.
