This special edition artist's book was designed in collaboration with Takaaki Matsumoto of Matsumoto Incorporated, New York, who also collaborated on the 1991 book 'Time Exposed.' 104 pp. with 48 plates, each on a two-page spread, beautifully printed on fine heavy stock matte art paper by Dai Nippon Printing Company, Ltd., Tokyo. All images were scanned and separated using quadtone separation, by Robert J. Hennessey. All plate sections were beautifully printed using drytrap offset printing on Mohawk Superfine Smooth Eggshell 100lb paper, by Meridian Printing, Rhode Island. The cover was silk-screened with Day-Glo ink and then matte film laminated. The book was Smythsewn bound and is enclosed in a specially designed cardboard slipcase covered in silver paper. The design and reproductions are absolutely exquisite and it is one of the most beautiful photography books I have ever seen! This first trade edition was limited to 4000 hardbound copies. The 56 total folded panels are attached to two photographically illustrated paper-covered boards, and housed in a white cardboard slipcase with black printed title. 25 of the 56 panels are printed text, an old Japanese story "Yashima" (in English and Japanese), printed in letterpress. 16 panels contain a total 5 black and white plates, beautifully printed on fine heavy stock matte art paper by Dai Nippon Printing Company, Ltd., Tokyo. 10 x 6-1/2 inches. The images include recent panoramic photographs of a pine tree garden in Tokyo ('Pine Tree Landscape, 2001'), one day seascape ('Yashima, 2001') and two photographs of burning candles (from the series 'In Praise of Shadows, 1999)'.
