Description

The first publication to present an informative survey of Finnish photographer Männikko's work, the imagery in this volume depicts still lifes of birds and fish, landscapes, forestry workers, hunters, fishermen and unemployed residents "who live their more or less isolated lives in remote places." From the foreword: "In the north of Finland... lie Kuhmo, Sodankylä and Kuivaniemi--places where Esko Männikko created his colour photographs and whose names he has adopted as the titles of his works. A sense of place is important here, not so much in terms of a geographic specification, but as an expression of participation and involvement in a certain lifeworld. Esko Männikko knows what he photographs--and he photographs what he knows. He may be a documentarist, but he is also a participant."
