2003 to 2004. Special Limited Edition of 100 copies with one of 20 original Type-C prints in a numbered edition of 5 each. This copy includes a color print of a U.S. Air Force C-141 "Starlifter" transport plane [n.b. this is the plane that airlifted people out of Hanoi in the closing days of the Vietnam war.] The print is signed "Daido" in black marker and stamp-numbered 4/5 by Moriyama on verso (image 7-3/8 x 11-1/4 inches, on approximately 24 x 29-cm (9.44 x 11.41-inch) glossy paper), mounted and matted in a separate white cloth-covered presentation portfolio (14-7/8 x 13 inches), with title stamped in black on the cover. Each of the four volumes is signed in bold white marker on the matte black front free endpaper Moriyama (in English and kanji).

All four volumes share the following format and binding: Hardcover. Fine white matte paper-covered boards with debossed title on front cover and spine, with photographically illustrated dust jackets (black and white reproduction is printed on each dust jacket's verso, with printed titles on front white side), in a photographically illustrated paper-covered board slipcase (inside each slipcase is a different printed self-portrait by Moriyama, pasted down and lining the entire interior of the slipcase). 11-1/4 x 9 inches.

New. The print, folio enclosure and all volumes are in flawless condition, in publisher's shrink-wrap (slit open for signature) and publisher's packaging (each volume is extremely well-packed, as is the complete set).

Description

SUMMARY: One of the most celebrated contemporary Japanese photographers, Daido Moriyama has explored a pioneering and innovative style of photography since his publication of Japan, A Photo Theater (1968). The Complete Works of Daido Moriyama chronologically presents all of his photographs first presented in books and magazines, each with a complete history. Each volume is approximately 600 pages (2,422 pp. all four volumes), with 5,758 images reproduced in total. All texts are in both English and Japanese. Each volume includes complete information on all reproduced photographs, including the reference number, title, medium, its first publication and subsequent reprints). This is a complete set of the four individually slipcased volumes (new condition, in publisher's packaging). This exquisitely designed set is the most comprehensive publication on Moriyama's work. It is one of the finest publications of its type published in recent memory. The complete 4-volume set (particularly with each volume signed) will become one of the most important and highly sought after publications on a major photographic artist, for years to come. CONTENTS OF THE COMPLETE WORKS:

VOLUME 1 (1964-1973), 600 pp.: After he met Takuma Nakahira and Shuji Terayama in 1964, Moriyama presented his "Mugon geki" ("Pantomime") in the magazine Gendai no me (The modern eye) (co-edited by Nakahira) in the following year. This volume collects Moriyama's photos serialized in Camera Mainichi, Asahi Graph and Asahi Camera, published in Farewell Photography, Hunter and Mayfly, and presented in Provoke no.2 and no.3. It contains an assemblage of photos, which has recently been discovered in the process of the editing of this volume and barely known in Moriyama's early years. Also included is an interview with the photographer Shomei Tomatsu and an essay by the writer Gerard Malanga.

VOLUME 2 (1974-1992), 616 pp.: In April, 1974, Moriyama opened the Workshop Photography School with Shomei Tomatsu, Nobuyoshi Araki, Eikoh Hosoe, Masahisa Fukase, and Noriaki Yokosuka. This volume contains the complete collection of Moriyama's photos presented in the Shashin Jidai, including his Tales of Tono, Japan, A Photo Theater II and Light and Shadow. The volume also includes a review by fine art critic, Midori Matsui.

VOLUME 3 (1993-1999), 662 pp.: This volume collects photographs published in A Dog's Time, three series of Daido hysteric, and the color photos presented in Color and Color 2. With a review by Dr. Charles Merewether, Collections Curator at the Getty Center.

VOLUME 4 (2000-2003), 544 pp.: This volume contains an assemblage of Moriyama's latest photos, including those recently taken for the new collections of photography, Shinjuku and '71-NY. Also included is a review by cultural critic Minoru Shimizu and the following detailed biographical information (compiled by Tetsuro Koike): A Chronology of Daido Moriyama, 1938-2003; Selected Bibliography; and Selected Exhibitions.
